Advanced Higher Art and Design

The Advanced Higher course allows pupils to experience an independent, self-directed study of either Art or Design.

Through the course pupils will develop the following skills:

Design

Internally Assessed Unit Work

Design Studies Unit: Research and investigate a design are of personal interest.

Design Enquiry Unit: Produce investigative design work and develop and refine your design ideas and concepts.

Design Portfolio

Sheet 1- design brief/context for the portfolio (no marks).

Practical design development work and design solutions between 8-15 sheets of up to A1 size or equivalent (Designs developed and refined using one or more selected ideas from their Design Enquiry work).

In-depth critical analysis of a single work or group of closely related designs (up to 1700 words), chosen from their earlier research into designers’ work and practice in the Design Studies Unit.

An evaluation of their portfolio of design work (up to 300 words).

Expressive

Internally Assessed Unit Work

Expressive Studies Unit: Research and investigate an expressive art area of personal interest.

Expressive Enquiry Unit: produce investigative research and develop and refine experimental ideas for expressive art work.

Expressive Portfolio

Sheet 1- expressive stimulus/theme/concept for the portfolio (no marks).
Practical development work and art works between 8-15 sheets of up to A1 size or equivalent (Art work developed and refined using one or more selected ideas from their Expressive Enquiry work).
In-depth critical analysis of a single work or group of closely related art works (up to 1700 words), chosen from their earlier research into artists’ work and practice in the Expressive Studies Unit.
An evaluation of their portfolio of art work (up to 300 words).
