National 5 Mathematics

In National 5 Applications of Maths, there are 6 main units.

The numerical skills unit involves working with surds, the laws of indices, rounding, reverse percentages, appreciation and depreciation and fractions.

The algebraic skills unit involves working with algebraic expressions (including expansion of brackets), factorising algebraic expressions, completing the square in a quadratic expression, symplifying an algebraic fraction, applying the four operations (add, subract, multiply, divide), calculating equations of straight lines and more.

The geometric skills unit involves the gradient of straight lines, circle geometry, applying Pythagoras' Theorum, working with three-dimensional coordinates, calculating the volume of solids and more.

The trigonometric skills unit involves working with the graphs of trigonometric functions (and in degrees), calculating the area of a triange using trigonometry, using the sine and cosine rules to find a side or angle in a triange and using bearings with trigonometry.

The statistical skills unit involves comparing data sets using statistics and forming a linear model from a given set of data.

The reasoning skills unit involves interpreting a situation where mathematical can be used and explaining a solution with its context

National 5 Applications of Mathematics

In National 5 Applications of Maths, there are 6 main units.

The numeracy skills unit involves using numerical notation and units, carrying out calculations (involving fractions, decimals, percentages and whole numbers), recording measurements using scale on an instrument, interpreting measurements and results to make decisions and justifying decisions by using results of mathematical calculations.

The financial skills unit involves analysing a financial position using budgets, analysing factors affecting income (such as basic pay, National Insurance and income tax), determining the best deal, converting between multiple currencies and investigating the impact of interest rates.

The statistical skills unit involves using a combination of statistics to investigate risk, using a combination of statistical information presented in different diagrams, using statistics to compare data sets and drawing a line of best fit from data.

The measurement skills unit involves calculating a quantity, constructing a scale drawing, planning a naviagtional course, calculating efficient container packing, using precedence tables to plan, solving a time-management problem and considering the effects of tolerance.

The geometric skills unit involves investigating a situation involving gradient, solving a problem involving composite shapes and the volume of composite solids and using Pythagoras' Theorum.

The graphical data and probability skills unit involves extracting different graphical forms, making decisions using evidence from interpreting data and making decisions based probability.
