Skills Development Scotland
Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is the national skills body who deliver Scotland’s career service within Falkirk High School. School-based Career Advisers, Katrina and Vikki, will offer career information, advice and guidance to all pupils from S1-S6 and beyond via the Post School service. They are there to help students, parents/carers and staff to understand the world of work and to develop the required career management skills that students will need as they move through and beyond Falkirk High School.

What support and advice can a Careers Adviser give?
Katrina and Vikki can speak and advise about:
• Finding out about yourself, your strengths and skills
• Making subject choices
• Different types of careers and how to research them
• Developing the types of skills that are useful in a job
• Routes into careers, including apprenticeships (also see apprenticeship tab at top of page)
• Building and developing your networks
• Supporting you to creating CVs
• Assisting with applications and applying for both college and university courses
My World of Work
My World of Work (MyWoW) is SDS’s online career information andadvice service and it’s packed full of activities and tools to help students confidently make the best decisions for themselves.
There’s lots to do and explore in My World of Work and the more you tell the site about yourself, the more career ideas you’ll get just for you. AS a pupil in Falkirk HIgh, you will use My World of Work in many different ways in PSE and other subject area/s.
My World of Work helps you with up-to-date information, advice and tools when you need it most.
- Option Choices – understand your strengths and make better choices about your subject choices and future career
- Leaving school – find a career that interests you and understand the skills you need to get the job you want
- Exam results – straight into a job or onto further learning? Whatever your grades find help in planning your next steps
- Preparing for a job – discover Scotland’s industries, search for jobs, build your CV and practice for interviews
- Modern Apprenticeships – why not earn as you learn. Find out what apprenticeships are available in Scotland and how they work
Support for Parents and Carers
Everyone wants their child to have a happy and successful future. And research shows that as a parent or carer you have the biggest influence on your child’s career decisions.
Careers Advisers will be in attendance at parents' evenings, parents' seminars or other whole school career events.
My World of Work offers advice to help you give your child the support they need including:
- Jobs in demand – Where are the job opportunities are in Scotland, now and in the future
- Routes and pathways – discover the different routes into those careers
- Career discussions – get hints and tips on speaking to your child about opportunities at the times that matter
Support for School Leavers
Careers advice and support to access opportunities once you leave Falkirk High School are also available from Skills Development Scotland. SDS is an all-age-service and will continue to support pupils once they have left school via their dedicated post school team who can help individuals to find work, training opportunities and in general, support with next steps.
